Free Works Cited Generator
Create a properly formatted MLA Works Cited list without building every entry by hand. Our Works Cited Generator helps you enter source information, generate individual Works Cited entries, add multiple sources, and organize them into one citation list — all within the free MLA Format Generator.
You can use the tool for websites, books, articles, journal papers, podcasts, PDFs, videos, images, reports, and other common academic sources. It follows the structure used in MLA 9th edition, while still giving you control to review and edit source details before copying your final Works Cited page.
How to Use the Works Cited Generator
Creating an entry takes only a few steps:
- Choose your source type, such as a website, book, article, or podcast.
- Enter the available source details or paste a URL when supported.
- Check the author, title, publication date, publisher, and other information found for the source.
- Select Generate to create the Works Cited entry.
- Review the result and correct any missing or inaccurate details.
- Add another source if your paper uses more than one reference.
- Copy your individual citation or the completed Works Cited list.
The generator handles the formatting, but the source information still matters. A citation can only be as accurate as the details supplied for the original source.
What Sources Can You Add?
A Works Cited page may contain many different kinds of material. Instead of using one fixed citation pattern for everything, MLA builds entries from the information that applies to each source. The MLA Style Center describes this approach through core elements such as the author, title, container, publisher, publication date, and location.
Our MLA Works Cited Generator can be used for common source types including:
Websites and Webpages
Enter the author or organization when available, page title, website name, publication date, and URL.
A specific webpage should generally be treated as the source rather than citing an entire website when the information you used appears on one particular page.
Books and Ebooks
For a standard book, the main details usually include the author, book title, publisher, and publication date. Ebooks may also require information about the platform or online location where the book was accessed.
Articles
The tool can create Works Cited entries for:
- website articles
- magazine articles
- newspaper articles
- scholarly articles
- journal articles
- articles accessed through databases
Journal sources may include additional information such as volume, issue, page range, DOI, or URL.
Podcasts
For a podcast episode, enter the available creator or host information, episode title, podcast name, publication date, publisher or platform when relevant, and the location where the episode was accessed.
YouTube Videos and Online Videos
Video citations may use information such as the video title, creator, channel or uploader, platform, publication date, and URL.
PDFs
A PDF is a file format rather than a single type of source. A PDF might contain a report, journal article, ebook, government publication, or another work.
When using the Works Cited Generator for a PDF, choose the type of material inside the PDF whenever possible and provide the publication information for that original work.
Reports and Government Publications
Add the organization or author, report title, publisher or issuing organization, publication date, report number when relevant, and URL for online reports.
Images, Photographs, and Artwork
The generator can also format entries for photographs, illustrations, paintings, and other visual works. Useful details can include the creator, title or description, date, collection or website, and location.
Movies, TV, and Streaming Video
Depending on how the source is being discussed, relevant information may include the title, director or other important contributor, production company, release date, streaming platform, and URL.
Interviews
For published or recorded interviews, enter the people involved, interview title when available, publication or platform, date, and location.
Songs and Recordings
Music sources can include the performer or creator, song title, album or larger work, record label or publisher, release date, platform, and URL when applicable.
The MLA Style Center provides examples covering books, online works, songs and recordings, movies and television, and images, reflecting how Works Cited entries change according to the type of source being documented.
How the MLA Works Cited Generator Builds an Entry
MLA does not require every source to contain the same information.
The generator looks at the details relevant to your source, which can include:
MLA 9 Core Elements Template
A location might be a page range, URL, DOI, or another way for the reader to find the source.
For online scholarly works, a DOI is generally preferred over a regular URL when one is available.
The generator then applies the appropriate punctuation, title formatting, italics, quotation marks, and ordering to turn those details into a Works Cited entry.
Create a Works Cited Page With Multiple Sources
Most research papers use more than one source. Instead of generating a citation, copying it somewhere else, and starting over, you can keep adding sources to the same Works Cited list.
Use the generator to:
- add multiple source entries
- edit an existing source
- remove an entry
- review citation details
- organize the list alphabetically
- copy the finished Works Cited page
MLA Works Cited lists use alphabetization so readers can quickly connect references in a paper with the corresponding source entry. MLA follows letter-by-letter alphabetization for Works Cited lists.
Works Cited Alphabetical Order and Hanging Indent
A correctly organized Works Cited page involves more than generating individual citations.
Entries are normally alphabetized according to the element that begins the citation, which is often the author's last name. When there is no author, the title may determine placement.
Works Cited entries also use a hanging indent. The first line begins at the left margin, while additional lines in the same entry are indented one-half inch. The list is double-spaced.
The generator can prepare entries in a format that is easier to move into your paper without manually reorganizing every source.
Works Cited Generator for MLA 9th Edition
This tool is designed for MLA 9th edition Works Cited entries.
The ninth edition of the MLA Handbook provides current guidance for Works Cited lists and source types ranging from traditional books to websites, ebooks, databases, and online videos.
Because source information varies, you may see different fields depending on whether you are citing a book, webpage, journal article, podcast, video, or another type of work.
Check Your Generated Works Cited Entry
Automatic formatting saves time, but always review a generated entry before submitting an academic paper.
Works Cited Review Checklist
- the correct author is listed
- the source title is complete
- the publication date is accurate
- the correct website, journal, or container is identified
- publisher information is not missing
- the DOI or URL points to the right source
- automatically detected information belongs to the work you actually used
If something is missing, edit the source details and generate the entry again.
